Watching TV can really be hazardous to your health, according to researchers in Australia.
Scientists at the School of Population Health at the University of Queensland studied 11,000 adults and their television habits. They also incorporated estimates about the amount of television that adults watch each year.
However, the problem isn’t the TV itself (no, you’re not going to be irradiated by your TV screen). Instead, it’s the lack of activity for long periods of time which is damaging to your health. Since many countries, the United States included, are experiencing an obesity epidemic, it’s easy to see how lack of activity could be detrimental to good health.
According to some experts, it’s recommended that you get at least an hour of moderate activity per day in order to maintain good health. Though it’s better to set up an exercise regimen, simply getting off your couch and getting active is enough to help lessen the effects of periods of long inactivity.
According to this study, watching one hour of television can shorten your life by 22 minutes.
This is approximately the same effect that you receive when you smoke two cigarettes.
